The SIDC Intraday Auctions Framework Expands in the Baltics as EPEX SPOT Joins

10 September 2026, SIDC Press Release

Baltic Multi-NEMO Intraday Auction Market Coupling went live on 8 September 2026. As of 8 September 2026, the European Power Exchange EPEX SPOT has joined the Intraday Auctions (SIDC IDA) framework in the Baltic region, contributing to enhanced trading opportunities and increased market efficiency in the area.

This milestone reflects the continued cooperation of regional project parties: AST, Elering, Nord Pool EMCO, EPEX SPOT, Fingrid, Litgrid, PSE and SVK. Their joint effort in extending SIDC solutions across Europe enables market participants to benefit from harmonised processes, enhanced competition, and increased flexibility in intraday trading.

The SIDC intraday auctions complement the continuous intraday market by providing additional opportunities for market participants to optimise their positions, thereby supporting secure and efficient system balancing and facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources.

This change brings not only direct advantages for Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, but also for the overall interconnected EU-wide region, thus representing a further strengthening of the European electricity market.

NEMOs and TSOs remain committed to close cooperation with all stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of both intraday and day-ahead integration projects across Europe.

Update on Day-Ahead Integration
Project parties also confirm that the go-live of the Baltic region MNA, within the Single Day-Ahead Coupling (SDAC) and involving EPEX SPOT, will take place at the end of September 2026.

This adjustment allows additional time to ensure full operational readiness, robust system testing, and a smooth and secure implementation for all market participants.

About SIDC:
The Single Intraday Coupling (SIDC) is a market mechanism in the intraday timeframe defined in the CACM Regulation based on continuous trading and complemented by three intraday auctions (so called “IDAs”).

The SIDC continuous trading solution is based on a common IT system with one Shared Order Book, a Capacity Management Module and a Shipping Module. It allows for orders entered by market participants for continuous matching in one bidding zone to be matched by orders similarly submitted by market participants in any other bidding zone within the European Intraday Coupling as long as transmission capacity is available. The intraday solution supports both explicit allocation (where approved by the respective National Regulatory Authorities) and implicit continuous trading. It is in line with the EU Target model for an integrated intraday market.

In addition, SIDC IDAs allow for the pricing of cross-border capacity in the intraday timeframe. IDAs are implicit auctions where collected orders are matched, and cross-zonal capacity is allocated simultaneously for different bidding zones, determining clearing prices for each bidding zone.

European-wide intraday coupling is a key component for completing the European Internal Energy Market. With the rising share of intermittent generation in the European generation mix, connecting intraday markets through cross-border trading is an increasingly important tool for market parties to keep positions balanced. The purpose of the SIDC is to increase the overall efficiency of intraday trading.
