Record trading in natural gas market

  • The trading volume for natural gas in August was the highest since October 2014. It amounted in total to 17, 381, 055 MWh, i.e. by 129.1% more than in August 2016.
  • The trading volume for electricity in August amounted to 6, 401, 846 MWh and was by 32.2% lower than in August the previous year.
  • The total trading volume for property rights in electricity in August this year amounted to 3, 610, 575 MWh. This means an increase versus August the previous year by 20.3%.


Natural gas


The total volume of transactions concluded on natural gas markets in August this year amounted to 17, 381, 055 MWh, which translates into an almost double y/y increase (by 129.1%) and represents the highest monthly volume since October 2014. On the Commodity Forward Instruments Market (CFIM), the trading volume amounted to 16, 530, 446 MWh of gas, which means a y/y increase by 148.2%. On the Day-Ahead and Intra-Day Market of gas (DAIDMg) the volume reached 850, 609 MWh, i.e. y/y drop by 8%. The spot market volume comprised 627, 792 MWh on the Day-Ahead Market of gas (a drop by 7.3% y/y) and 222, 817 MWh on the Intra-Day Market of gas (a drop by 9.9% y/y).

The weighted average price on DAIDMg increased to 72.53 PLN/MWh in August, i.e. by 3.26 PLN/MWh versus July this year. On the CFIM, the weighted average price of a contract with delivery in 2018 (GAS_BASE_Y-18) amounted to 80.57 PLN/MWh, i.e. by 2.37 PLN/MWh more than in the previous month.

Electricity

The trading volume for electricity on TGE in August amounted to 6, 401, 846 MWh and was lower by 32.2% than in August 2016. There was a drop by 39.8% y/y on the CFIM, with a volume of 4, 507, 286 MWh. On the spot market in turn, the volume dropped y/y by 3.1% to 1, 894, 560 MWh.

The BASE weighted average price on the Day-Ahead Market reached 163.47 PLN/MWh in August – by 6.81 PLN/MWh higher than in July this year. On the CFIM in turn, the weighted average price of an annual contract with sequential delivery in 2018 (BASE_Y-18) amounted to 163.72 PLN/MWh, which means a drop by 0.50 PLN/MWh versus the quoting price for such contract in July.

Property rights

The total trading volume for property rights in electricity in August this year amounted to 3, 610, 575 MWh. This means an increase versus August the previous year by 20.3%.

The trading volume for green certificates (PMOZE and PMOZE_A instruments on the Property Rights Market and instruments on the CFIM) reached 2, 354, 931 MWh, i.e. by 26.5% higher than in August 2016. The weighted average price on the PRM sessions was 38.95 PLN/MWh for PMOZE_A, which means an increase by 7.78 PLN/MWh versus July this year.

The trading volume for green certificates on the PRM sessions was the highest in the exchange history and for the first time exceeded 1 TWh per month (1, 071, 012 MWh). At the same time, the volume was for the first time in the history of that market higher than the volume of OTC transactions – 1, 069, 918 MWh.

The trading volume for blue certificates in August reached 67, 474 MWh. Most of it – 53, 240 MWh – comprised session transactions, where the weighted average price increased m/m by 4.40 PLN/MWh to the level of 306.45 PLN/MWh.

The trading volume for property rights in energy performance amounted to 18, 821 toe (including 18, 417 toe for PMEF instrument), which means a drop y/y by 43.9 %. The weighted average session price for PMEF dropped m/m by 130.08 PLN/toe to the level of 714.85 PLN/toe.

Guarantee of Origin Register

In August 2017 the volume of transactions concluded in the Guarantee of Origin Register amounted to 131, 922 MWh, for which the weighted average price amounted to 0.52 PLN/MWh.

New members

As of the end of August 2017, 70 companies had the status of a member on the Exchange Commodity Market.

As of 31 August 2017, 3, 320 entities were members of the Certificate of Origin Register kept by the Polish Power Exchange, 50 of them jointed in August.

316 entities have the status of a member of the Guarantee of Origin Register.
