Summary of trading activity at TGE in October 2018 Best performance in the electricity and gas markets since 2014.

  • The volume of electricity trade in 2018 reached 188,043,426 MWh at the end of October, exceeding the record-breaking annual trading volume in 2014 (186,800,654 MWh). The last month ended with the result of 29,277,668 MWh, which means an increase by 122.3% compared to October 2017.
  • The volume of transactions concluded on natural gas markets in October totalled 21,224,180 MWh, which translates to a YoY growth by 35.0 per cent and represents the best result since the beginning of 2018 and, at the same time the best since 4 years (23,990,245 MWh in October 2014).
  • The volume of electricity property rights traded in October totalled 3,978,858 MWh and was higher by 11.3 than in October 2017.

Electricity

The volume of electricity traded at TGE in October totalled 29,277,668 MWh, and was higher by 122.3 per cent than in October 2017. On the Commodity Forward Instruments Market with Physical Delivery (CFIM), the volume grew by 141.5 per cent YoY reaching  26,720,490 MWh. Meanwhile, on the spot market the volume grew by 21.3% YoY and totalled 2,557,178 MWh. The volume of electricity trade in 2018 reached 188,043,426 MWh at the end of the month, exceeding the record-breaking annual trading volume in 2014 (186,800,654 MWh).

The weighted average price of the BASE contract on the Day Ahead Market in October was 248.28 PLN/MWh going up by 27.96 PLN/MWh above its September level. On the CFIM, the weighted average price of the contract with base load delivery in 2019 (BASE_Y-19) fell down to 275.76 PLN/MWh, i.e. was lower by 9.77 PLN/MWh comparing to the quotations of this contract in September.

Natural gas

The volume of transactions concluded on natural gas markets in October totalled 21,224, 180 MWh, which translates to a YoY growth by 35.0 per cent and represents the best result since the beginning of 2018 and, at the same time the best since 4 years (23,990,245 MWh in October 2014). The trading volume on the CFIM amounted to 19,517,513 MWh and was higher by 40.2% year on year. On the Day-Ahead and Intraday Market the (DAM&IDM), the volume totalled 1,706,667 MWh, i.e. was 5.2 per cent lower than in October 2017. The spot market volume was constituted by 1,109,452 MWh traded on DAMg (decrease by 14.8 per cent YoY) and 597,215 MWh on IDMg (increase by 19.9 per cent YoY).

The weighted average price on the DAM&IDMg fell in October to 115.79 PLN/MWh, i.e. Was lower by 8.23 PLN/MWh than in September 2018.  On the CFIM, the weighted average price of a Price contract with delivery in 2019 (GAS_BASE_Y-19) was 116.44 PLN/MWh, i.e. Lower by 1.66 PLN/MWh than in September.

Property Rights

The volume of electricity property rights traded in October totalled 3,978,858 MWh and was higher by 11.3 comparing to the October 2017. The volume of trade in green certificates (PMOZE and PMOZE_A instruments on the Property Rights Market) amounted to 3,109,293 MWh, exceeding the October 2017 level by 42.6 per cent. The weighted average price for the PMOZE_A instrument traded during the PRM sessions was 140.97 PLN/MWh, i.e. was higher by 11.67 PLN/MWh than in September 2018.

The volume for property rights related to energy efficiency totalled 31,648 toe (of which 24,290 toe for the PMEF instrument), which means a decrease by 34.1 per cent year-on-year. The weighted average price during market sessions for the PMEF instrument went down by 157.42 PLN/toe MoM, to the level of 533.97 PLN/toe.
Guarantees of Origin Register

In October 2018, the volume of transactions concluded in the Guarantees of Origin Register totalled 3,769,560 MWh (70-times increase YoY), for which the weighted average price amounted to 0.41 PLN/MWh (0.03 PLN/MWh more than in September of this year). It was the month with the highest volume of transactions in the history of the GOR, which was 47.9% higher than the volume of trade in the entire 2017 (2,548,261 MWh).

Steam coal

The steam coal price index PSCMI 1, based on the ex-works pricing data for supplied by the Industrial Development Agency (ARP) for utility and industrial power generation sector at the end of September 2018 stood at 245.38 PLN/t, which represents a decrease by 1.23 per cent comparing to August, while the price per 1 GJ of energy went down by 1.31 per cent to 11.28 PLN/GJ. Meanwhile, the PSCMI 2 index which reflects prices for industrial and municipal CHP plants increased by 2.62 per cent in the same period reaching 309.50 PLN/t. The index value per unit of energy increased by 2.97 per cent reaching 12.83 PLN/GJ.

The change of monthly indices as compared to September 2017 was 39.21 PLN/t for PSCMI 1 (increase by 19.02 per cent) and 71.84 PLN/t for PSCMI 2 (increase by 30.23 per cent). The price per 1 GJ increased YoY, respectively, by 1.89 PLN/GJ (PSCMI 1 growth by 20.13 per cent) and 2.80 PLN/GJ (PSCMI 2 growth by 27.92 per cent).

New participants

At the end of October, 78 companies enjoyed the status of the member of the Commodity Market (CM).
As at 31 October 2018, the Certificate of Origin Register maintained by Towarowa Giełda Energii had 3688 members with 15 of them joining in the month of October.
Currently, there are 424 entities registered as the members of the Guarantees of Origin Register.
