Polish Power Exchange (TGE) and NODES have formed a strategic partnership to support the development of the market for flexibility services in Poland. The initiative will begin with a pilot project, enabling distribution system operators (DSOs) to evaluate market-based options for procuring flexibility services to enhance power grid efficiency. The project will also examine options for cooperation and coordination between the DSOs and the transmission system operator (TSO).

This partnership brings together TGE’s unique position as the facilitator of the Polish wholesale electricity market and its in-depth understanding of the domestic sector with NODES’s proven technology platform and extensive experience in establishing and operating flexibility markets across the Nordic countries, continental Europe, and Canada. Both companies will collaborate with distribution system operators and the transmission system operator to assess how energy storage facilities, renewable energy installations, flexible consumers, and other flexibility resources can support grid stability, alleviate congestion, and improve the integration of renewable energy sources. The first stage will involve launching and fine-tuning a test version of the flexibility services trading platform in collaboration with electricity system operators.

‘We are convinced that flexibility is one of the key elements of the energy transition, and that the exchange can serve not only as a marketplace for energy trading but also as a mechanism to support the efficient operation of the electricity system. Accordingly, we have continually taken steps to develop a flexibility market in Poland, prioritising the creation of a platform for such services. This was the aim of the cooperation agreements signed with domestic DSOs and the TSO this year, and also the objective of the partnership with NODES, supported by our capital stake. Investing in NODES will give the Polish Exchange access to the advanced technology and expertise required to pursue our plans in Poland and to expand our regional presence. As a shareholder, we wish to play an active role in developing flexibility markets in Central and Eastern Europe and to support NODES’ expansion into further markets across the Old Continent’, said Piotr Listwoń, President of the Management Board of TGE.

‘Flexibility will play a critical role in maintaining reliability, resilience, and supporting the energy transition. Through our pilot project and strategic partnership with TGE, including their investment in NODES, we are strengthening our ability to innovate and accelerate the development of flexibility markets. Together, we aim to demonstrate how flexibility can be effectively integrated into power system operations, creating a more efficient, resilient, and decarbonised energy system for Poland and beyond’, added Richard Sarti, CEO of NODES.

As part of the collaboration, TGE has acquired a 10 per cent stake in NODES, strengthening the partnership to develop modern market mechanisms that support the use of flexibility services. This capital investment will enable both organisations to work even more closely to develop solutions that address the challenges of the energy transition.

‘We are pleased to welcome TGE as a co-investor in NODES. This investment validates the strong position the company has established and the significant opportunities ahead. NODES has built a highly differentiated technology platform for flexibility markets, and we remain committed to supporting its continued growth. We also welcome the opportunity to engage with additional strategic partners who can contribute to the company's long-term value creation’, summarised Atle Knudsen, Executive Vice President Customer and Energy Services at Å Energi, the majority shareholder in NODES.

TGE’s investment in NODES demonstrates the Polish Exchange’s readiness to expand its activities internationally and beyond the conventional energy and gas trading sectors. Importantly, the company believes the current investment can create tangible value for TGE and does not rule out increasing its capital stake in NODES in the future.
